Why Classical Pilates Isn't the Best (Stand Alone) Cross Training Plan for Dancers

Before all of the classical Pilates instructors clutch their pearls and gasp; we aren't saying Pilates isn't an effective and amazing form of exercise. It obviously strengthens muscles, improves flexibility and mobility, improves core strength and postures, etc.

The problem with using it as the sole form of cross training for dancers is that so many of the movements mimic what dancers are already doing in the studio. It is important to have a cross-training plan that includes movements that are unique to what dancers are doing in their daily training. This will target and strengthen areas that are NOT being addressed in class.

This is where the absolute magic of injury prevention and creating powerful and strong dancers happens. Weight training, resistance training, endurance training, plyometrics, and yoga each have their own unique benefits for our bodies. Keeping a variety of exercise styles in your toolbox will improve your abilities on the dance floor more than you know.

So, when people wonder why we have so many different types of equipment or get fussy because Dance Technician doesn't teach Classical Pilates, this is why.

Consider adding some unique styles of cross training to your routine! Don't be afraid to switch it up and switch it up often. Keep your body guessing what is next!

Stay Tutu Strong,
